I come back to visit newburgh once or twice a year...I walk through my childhood neighborhoods, Downing Park, washington Headquarters and yes, ALWAYS lunch at Pete's hot dogs!
I was born in Newburgh in 1952 and left in 1969. I left to make a better life for myself, having been the eldest of 8 children, and yes we were poor!!! I recall being scorned by friends, neighbors and sadly even by some relatives.
I come back every year so that I will never forget where I came from. I became a productive member of society, I have had a very fulfilling career working for New York State and I retired after 27 years of state service.
I spend my time freelancing as a writer, spending time with my children and grandchildren and taking my trips down memory land during my visits to Newburgh

Sunday night was also the start of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel...

Kendal Henry should approach LandShark Lager to host a party/gala to raise money for the Cultural and Economic Development.

That sharkfin could be a great marketing tool if they decide to use it that way.

Another article in today's Times-Herald Record, "City of Newburgh courthouse bond vote on hold":
http://recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080727/NEWS/807270329

Excerpt:
Council members have said they want a detailed list of the expenses and have hinted they could delay any future consideration of a bond until the annual budget talks. They want answers to other questions too, questions like, why didn't the city know about the asbestos in the walls before they had to pay $2.5 million to deal with it?

McGrane had hoped to deal with those questions later. She says the most pressing issue is the bond. If the council never approves it, the city could use its general fund to pay the extra costs. That would nearly wipe it out, McGrane said, leaving Newburgh vulnerable to any emergency expenses.

She had argued there was plenty of time to talk about things like asbestos later but said Saturday that she now sees a new bond has little chance until all of the council's questions have been answered. That means going through the financing to explain how a $12.2 million project became an $18.6 million one.

Apparently, there is somebody here from the Times Herald-Record. I just discovered Chris Mele's excellent blog "Your Right To Know" which was started June 6th and is covering FOIL and government transparency issues. There's a couple of posts about Newburgh's breach detailed here (see June 6 and 13 in the archives): http://forums.recordonline.com/n/blogs/blog.aspx?nav=main&webtag=th-foil
