Newburgh residents past and present welcomed Captain Henry Hudson and his ship the Half Moon on Saturday at the kick-off event for the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial and Newburgh’s 300th Birthday celebration.
“I’m glad to be back in Newburgh for the first time in almost 400 years,” said Captain Hudson.
Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing under contract to the Dutch East India Company, was among the first Europeans to explore the river as far north as Newburgh. His ship, the Half Moon, sailed into Newburgh Bay twice in 1609, and his first mate’s journal entry notes this as “a pleasant place to build a town.”
Newburgh resident Cynthia Fountain, a Lenape/Penobscot Native American, presented Capt. Henry Hudson and Capt. William T. (Chip) Reynolds, Captain of the replica Half Moon, with a welcoming gift.
Also celebrating was Ulysses J. Alsdorf (Kevin Barrett), a talented Newburgh native who performed his theme song of the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration, Dear Hudson Fulton Days:
Dear Hudson Fulton Days
Dear Hudson Fulton Days
Achievements Great we’ll celebrate
Get on the Job and Fly.
Our River Beats the Rhine
Steam Navigation’s Fine
For you we’ll Blow Blow Blow Ourselves
TOOT TOOT Bye BYE!
The event concluded with the cutting of the Quadricentennial Cake.
